A POIGNANT wartime love letter from a smitten girl to her Royal Navy sweetheart has been discovered more than 60 years after it was penned. The words of affection to her sweetheart were written by a girl, known only as Joyce, from her home at 14 Hoghill Road, Collier Row, in June 1944. It was addressed to her darling Alfie Pepper, a young Navy man stationed at HMS Valkyrie in Douglas in the Isle of Man. The letter was found recently under an attic's floorboards by Norman Cadwallader when he was renovating a three-storey house on the island. Mr Cadwallader's son, Andy, sent the letter to the island's newspaper in a bid to find the love struck youngsters, and reporter Terry Cringle has passed it on to the Recorder. Joyce's home at 14 Hoghill Road is long gone and is now the site of a car showroom. The Recorder has also searched the Forces Reunited website and contacted all the A Peppers listed in Essex, but to no avail. Hi Carol - this is dejavu isn't it? I well remember the night you posted about Herta and Heinz and the fantastic end result. Such happy times, let's hope we can all get together again for this sort of research at some point!! |

Perhaps someone in the Romford area could search that address for the electoral list, hoping that Joyce's family were still there after the war. Maybe Joyce would feature there. Gwyn |

Have been right through the marriage index from 1944 to 1954, but no Alfred Pepper marrying a Joyce :-( The only Alfred Pepper marriage in Romford in that time was to a Kathleen L Lovegrove in Sep 1948. There's a couple in Southend too - but of course, Alfred might not have been from Essex anyway... Richard |
