Wow, thank you all very much! Loads of new information there. So looks like George was born in Suffolk (where both parents were born) and then the whole family moved to Durham, via Staffordshire, by 1855. Why!? Perhaps lack of need for shepherds in Suffolk for some reason, you'd think it'd be better work than labouring! Something to look into. Many thanks for your time! Kind regards Helen

Jess I think this could be the George Coates you found the christening of. Birth could actually be your George. Name: George Coates Year of Registration: 1844 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar DISTRICT: Mildenhall County: Suffolk Volume: 13 Page: 490 Death. Dont know who this is though. I have a George Coates shown on the 1881 census. Born c1845 in 'Freeklieu' Suffolk. Married to Isabella Coates (first child Mary H Coates born to them c1869 in Edmonsley, co.Durham). Living in Holmside, Co.Durham by 1881. I would love to find out where George was from as can't find a Freeklieu on the map! Thankyou. Helen
