Has anyone else had problems with miss spelling of names on the marriage index? I've been looking for my great grandparents Harry Gray to Maud yull, have found Harry Gray to Yudd! & William Mack to Sophia Weston & have Found William Mack to Woston! They are both in the right area about the right time, wondering if its a common problem?

have you looked on the index for other way round to make sure right by getting their christen names for the wives Jeanette

Clare, The answer to your question is yes! I think it is quite common to have names mis-transcribed: Sometimes because the people registering the birth/marriage/death couldn't spell very well themselves and probably wouldn't have noticed anyway. I've had Brumby for Bromley, I've had Haddock for Haydock and have found Cheers, Cheirs and Chears. The list goes on... If the area and year are right its always worth checking - you never know. As advised, try the name of the other partner as a check - would be very unlucky to have their forename written incorrectly as well. Jay
