I think Job is usually a name in its own right.

I have a rellie called Job and have him named Job on the 1881 & 1891 census, I have a possible sighting in 1901 but he's listed as Joseph. Could it be one in the same?

Job was a biblical character and has a book of the OT named after him. It is quite common, particularly in 18th & 19th centuries, and appealed, particularly, to non-conformists, who were very fond of using biblical names for their children. PS Job & Joseph are quite different in the original Hebrew.

This is getting more & more curious. Had been looking for my Job in 1901 having found him in 1881 & 1891. I've now found his father in 1901 who in previous census and his marriage entry is listed with a first name of Lot is now called Joseph in 1901? How odd?

Hi Nikki, I just googled Old testament and come up with this... According to the Testament of Job, another name for Job is Jobab. Genesis 36:33 identifies a Jobab, as a descendant of Esau, a king of Edom. Also Lot: Lot (Bible), the nephew of Abraham, the head of the only family saved from Sodom. Julie x
