Having a bit of trouble on scotlands people I was wanting to look up two marraiges: James Gordon+Elspeth Troup 1853 Huntly Aberdeenshire James Holohan and Margaret Donnelly 1856 Dundee I already knew the dates as the marraiges are on the IGI, but I really wanted to see th parents names on the actual certificates. The Holohan one I was able to view for 5 credits . Sadly it turned out to be illegible. I have reported this to customer service. The Gordon one being just two years shy of statutory BMD registration, did not have an image available, but told me I can order an 'extract' for £10. Does this mean to find the info I'm looking for I have to pay them another £10 and wait for something to be posted? If so no way round this? Theres another two or three marraige records I also wanted to view for parents details, but likewise all pre 1855. Am I going to have to shell out nearly £50 in all here? ..hope not. Any advice greatly recieved. |

Before 1855 the parents names are not on marriage certificate as I have 2 one from 1854 and one from 1833 but if they died in scotland between 1855 and 1955 they will have parents names on death certificate |

I have James Gordons death cert from 1892, but unfortunately the space for parents names is blank. I'm pretty certain that this is because his son William who reported the death didn't know this info. Elspeths does give her parents, so I'm fine with that, just desperately trying to find out who James's parents were. |

Scottish registration only started in 1855, everything before that are Old Parish registers. Dont go paying £10 to Scotlandspeople. You can view OPR at your local LDS centre for free or if your in Scotland then most of the local libraries have the OPR on micro film (mostly their local area). Though as has been said before, parents may not be listed. Fathers might but i doubt mothers will. The 1841/51 census may help you work out who the parents are as well as death certs. Mhairi |

Unfortunately James's death cert as I say desn't have the parents info. All I do know is he was born around 1824/5, and he was definently not born in Huntly. To make matters even more confusing he is very incosistent in the censi from 1861-1891 with his birthplace, and in eac case it's barely legible. Though legible enough to see it's different! One looks like 'Furie' or 'Fyvie'?. I was just really hoping the marraige record would clear it up for me. Might still order it anyway, as I've already paid £6 just for the credits and have nothing to show for them yet. Would be a shame to just give up. |

Richard, I am having the same problem with a James Gillespie married to Mary Fegusson in Kirkgunzeon, Kircudbright, Scotland also before 1855. My Marriage cert (paid £10.- for is) has only Mary's parents and just a dash where James' parents should be. I thought the blanks could actually mean that he was an orphan, so I am please you all put me right there. I didn't realize the certificates before 1855 didn't have the parents names stated. Elaine |
