In my family a GGGG Grandad, Richard Mcginty moved over to England from Ireland. He married Annie Kirby Johnson at Market Weighton in Jan 1878 and they had a daughter call Charlotte Ann McGinty. This is where it gets odd. All further children are called Sherwood. It appears he changed their names somewhere along the line. My Grandma's maiden name is Sherwood but she remembers Aunt Charlotte and her being a Mcginty. Can anyone shed any light on this one?!?!?

Did Richard and Annie keep their surnames? Have you found the family in each census? Gwyn

Richard and Annie also change their names to Sherwood. I have Richard in 1901 as a Sherwood shown as a widower and remarried. The reason I know this is a great aunt who is still alive remembers the family ructions when Charlotte Ann found her birth certificate and saw her real surname was Mcginty and that is when the whole name change thing came out!!!

Thanks for the info. Richard is definately a McGinty on Charlottes birth cert and on his marriage cert to Annie. The from Charlotte being born to the census the name changes to Sherwood and I'm 99% positive it's the same family!!!

There is a registered One Name Study of the SHERWOOD surname. I'm sure the researcher would be interested in your story and may be able to help further. Details on how to contact are on the Guild of One Name Studies site. Click on registered names. Gwyn

Maybe if there was prejudice or some such against the Irish where they were (or when it was), maybe they just picked a name out of thin air that wasn't Irish to give them a better chance. Although, they would have had to change their accent etc aswell...... Just an idea!!

One possibility, could there have been an inheritance, sometimes this is tied in to a change of name. Jennifer
