Thanks for the tips.............sorry the message wasn't very clear....the story goes my nan had a missing presumed dead letter about my grandfather she then had a child by another man. When it was found out my granfather was still alive the relationship with other man ended... Granda came back from war and adopted the child... does this make it any clearer.... i know the child was registered in the other mans name because we have the adoption papers..i will try a search for him under that name... once again many thanks

They will be indexed with their original birth name. As the mother was Mrs ( name) the child was most likely registered with the same surname, even though her husband was not the father. *Have jus re read your message....No, you haven't said she was married at the time of birth, so probably it will be registered under her maiden name. If the birth father was present at the registration, the birth could have been logged under his name. Gwyn

The birth will only be registered under the original surname (NOT the adopted surname) ie: Mothers maiden name , or Birthfathers name. Ann

I would think that you would look for either the real father's surname, or the mother's maiden name, if the mother wasn't married at the time of the birth. Kath. x

Well if he were registered when mum was single it will be under her name - is that what you mean?

If someone was adopted by their mothers husband who was not their father do i look for adopted name or fathers surname when looking at for birth in BMD. Does this makes sense...?? :-(
