Hi, I have details of one of my Robert Rutherford's b1813 marrying a Christian Cowans b1816 abt 1865, BUT Also I have what looks like the same Robert married to a Catherine Cowans b1813 abt 1846. Both marriages were Northumberlandshire. Is there any way to tell if this is the same Robert? Could it also be possible that the Cowans were sisters. Cheers Andy

Have you traced him and possible wives him through the Census?

You could search the complete marriage index on Ancestry (it's free to search) and find the references for both marriages. If you bought the certificates you would be able to see whether the father's name for Robert was the same on both certificates, and also whether the father for Catherine and Christian was the same.

The Robert that Jeanette found in the 1861 census was the only one I could find with a wife called Catherine. These Roberts would seem to be the same person. His occupation on both census is Shepherd and birthplace Thorneyburn. Both wives born Falstone, so could be sisters. Kath. x
