In the mid 40's what age did you have to be before you could join the Royal Navy. Did it make a difference to the age if you were a cadet? Also what was the normal length of signing up for? Thank you.

Hi ya, My Grandad was in the merchant navy, he joined when he was around 12 or 13, he ran away and forged his fathers signature. He was only 15 when he recieved the Atlantic Star, which was in 1939. I think... but i may be wrong as long as they had their Fathers permission they could join at any age. Best wishes Julie

Lindsey, My dad joined the Navy when he was 16, in 1942. Initially he was land-based and worked as a courier. Just realised dad was always mad about motor bikes, and he rode one as a courier - at 16!! Mind you his dad may have had some influence - he was a Commander. maggie

I know that officer cadets joined the Royal Australian Navy at 13 up until 1954 (ever looked at a 13 year old boy recently?...!) - and would imagine 'mirror imagined' the RN. Don't know about enlisted men but would imagine they would not have needed be much more since in those days you could leave school at 14 and were considered ready for a job. Victoria
