I have found a document that I think relates to a member of my family on the National Archives Website. I can't get down to the archives myself, but after reading all the information I have found that they do copy documents for a fee. Does anyone know roughly how much this will cost?

What sort of a document is it? You can download some of them (like wills) for a small sum (£3.50 if I remember rightly).

It isn't a downloadable one, but after reading the information on the site, it looks like they will copy documents for you. You can ask them for an estimate of price, so will probably try that, but just wondered if anyone else had used it.

No, I haven't used the National Archives service, but I have had copies of documents from County Records Offices. I had a will copied from the Derbyshire one (I think that was about £9.50) and a will and various other documents that came with it which was from Oxfordshire. As far as I can remember that was about £12.50 which was half an hour's research fee, but was money well spent as it helped to break down a huge brick wall in my tree. I would ask them for an estimate.

I've done one but i think it was only one side or sheet but its only costing me 80p plus £1.70 in postage. Ask them for an estimate it might not be that much. Mhairi

I have had three documents from that service. When you see the one you want you click on request estimate & follow thro the sequence. an email will be set to you giving the price & a link in the email to order. I got today, a copy of my grtx5 Grandfathers navy record from when he joined aged 13!!! in 1798 - 1804 when he left. isnt much ,just a list and dates of the vessels he served on ,but it still nice to have, cost me 50p for the photocopy plus £1.60 for postage. took about a week all told Shirley

Thanks Shirley, would love something like that. The one that I want is a winding-up order on a shop that my Great Grandad and his sons had in Sheffield. I'm not even sure if its the right business because it only gives his name, no address, but am prepared to risk it if it's not too expensive.

Maggy it depends how many sheet that have to be copied . usual price is 50p per sheet, plus postage. you can request the estimate but if it too much you are not obliged to accept it . Shirley

*Update* had an email today saying that the first document will cost me £31.50. Don't think I'm that desperate, will wait to see how much the second one will cost!

Another update. I did send for the second document, hoping that it was the right one, and it was!! It was a document of the winding-up order for my Great x 3 grandfathers Cabinet Making business in Sheffield, and makes interesting reading. His son carried on the business after he died and desperately tried to keep it going. It cost me just short of £9, but worth every penny. To anyone else, if you have just a feeling that it may be the document you want, go for it!!

Maggy I,m glad you got what you wanted, I,ve also got a copy of my grt grt x4 grandads army record .he joined in 1827 and was invalided out in 1839. Cost me £9.50 too and worth every penny. this is from my mums side of the family. Puts more meat on the bones to the person and makes them more than a name Shirley
