Hi I am from the Cessford family, does anyone know where I can find where the name originated from and is it connected with Cessford Castle. I have tried to find out but there is no clan Cessford in Scotland even though I have traced family there. Thanks Karen

Hi Karen, A search on http://www.spatial-literacy.org shows that the name is most frequent in North East England and South East Scotland - this taken from 1998. It also shows that in 1888 the name was even more strongly linked to the area. The top areas for its occurence are: Galashiels and Earlston It categorises the name as: English - Locational Name; Settlement Ending; Ford Hope this helps. Matt

Hi Matt thanks for the look up, I shall look there for more cessfords. Thanks Karen

Clans are very much a Highland thing, There's no Nisbet/Nesbitt clan either, but that name is certainly Scottish! The surname Cessford is probably from the village's name. Certainly the distribution suggests so. Gordon

Hi Karen, I think Gordon could be right. I have just looked Galashiels and Earlston up on multimap. They are very close together, right on the border with England and Scotland, close to Jedburgh. Guess what? Cessford is only twenty miles from Galashiels. I can't be certain, but I reckon that's where the name originates from. Matt
