I am looking for maiden name of Emily Payne, William H. Payne's wife. On the census it says born in Hoxton. Does anyone have any idea which area that would come under please. I have found a marriage of Emily Taylor to William Payne in St. Saviour Southwark in 1878. Not sure if that is near Hoxton. Any ideas please. Thanks in advance Pam.

Hoxton is an area just north of the City of London, and was part of Shoreditch.

Hoxton is near Bethnal Green and Shoreditch. The County line changed from Middlesex to London around that time and everyone used something different! Southwark is the other side of the Thames not far as the crow flies but tell that to a Cockney! good luck Sue

Hello again. Just double checked all census. 1881 Poplar Mddx. 1891 Hoxton 1901 Stepney. Any ideas? There are lots of Emily Taylors and not sure who to choose!!! Thanks Pam.

They are all in roughly the same area, none of which are that close to Southwark, but bear in mind Southwark Cathedral would possible cover the diocese that includes Hoxton etc.

I was looking for my Grandfather's ancestors in Hoxton last year and sadly, so much of the area was badly bombed in the 2nd world war that there's very little of the 'old area' left. Lyndsey
