Find out where and when he died, which regiment/batallion he was with, where he's buried, and then look online for historical info regarding the battle itself i.e. which regiments were involved, when and where. My gt-grandfather died at the battle of the Somme on July 3 1916. It was such an infamous battle that there are many many resources online. Just run 'Somme' through Google. |

I found a relative on findmypast.com who died in WW1 and also one for a friend's search. if you have the name you can search through the WW! deaths but it will then mean you purchasing units to view. Not too expensive .When you find out what regiment he was in you can 'google' it ,I found regiment sites which have war diaries and campaign details , very interesting but desperately sad. |

There was a fascinating drama documentary about the Somme last night on Channel 4. Recounting the events of July 1st 1916. British soldiers launched an all-out attack on the German positions in France. More than 60.000 troops went 'over the top' on the first day of the offensive - which left almost 20,000 dead. It was a repeat so perhaps some of you saw it already. Linda |

Best bet, if he was killed, is to go to the Commonwealth Graves site and try his name - if he was killed during the Somme or any other battle it will tell you the date etc and also tell you whether he is buried in a cemetary or if he only appears on a memorial to the fallen as unknown burial place. |

There was an interesting drama-documentary on television last night about the Battle of the Somme. Do, please, have a look at this website: http://www.1914-1918.net/ |
