Isn't it the most annoying thing to have Lithuanian connections when it comes to trying to trace them - most elusive lot! going to give those variant spellings a try, I'll let you know how I get on! :) Lesley Many thanks for your help too. I have Litrhuianian rellies and it took me a looooong time to finally decide on what the name should have read which and it was not far from the actual current Lith spelling and now with the help of the Lith White Pages I have found the descendants alive and kicking in Lithuania and stem from the same great grandfather as my rellies in this country. By the way, I do not speak the language but have had to learn a lot about surnames etc., to reach the end conclusion. You have said that the name is WAISNIS but there is no letter W in the Lithuanian alphabet. The name as you see it may be a corruption via German influence of a surname beginning with the letter V ....... VAISNIS but I have made a search for such a name without any luck - though admitted the LDS Family Search does show several WAISNIS but I cannot find any such name arriving in the States. The German, Polish and Russian influences have a lot to answer to when it comes to 'decoding' names and though there may be other views on the name you are searching I would offer the following ideas - VAICENIS - there is an accent over the C VAICIUNAS - there are 153 numbers currently listed in the tel directory.

Georgina Many thanks for your reply. I wonder if there are any visitors pre 1881 maybe even in 1860/70s? Can I be really cheeky? I am also trying to trace William Black born 1834ish. One census has him listed as beeing born Workington Cumberland. His wife's name is Mary and he had two daughters pre 1861 Margaret Ann b1858 and Sarah Ann b1860 My mum is convinced that they originated in Scotland though exactly where I don't know. Lyn I have just checked the 1881 scottish census & there is no one from Lithuania in scotland at that time. Georgina.

My trusted friends, There are so many brilliant people on here so willing to help and it is so appreciated, so I'm calling on you again to see if anybody can sort this out for me. I have in my tree ancestors (not many of them) whose name is WAISNIS or as on some censuses transcribed as WISENESS. I am quite convinced from extensive research that the name is of Lithuanian origin. Another variant spelling of this name is VAISNYS. I have found articles on Lithuanians emigrating to Scotland at the end of the 19th and start of 20th century. Is there anybody who could look up a Lithuanian John Vaisnys/Waisnis who was born around 1830 who may have travelled into Scotland on Scotlands People or any other Scottish ancestry webs. The only other family details I have on this is my GtGtGrandfather - John's son was called Henry and Henry married my GtGtGrandmother in Liverpool in 1871.
