Dotty As regards the C/K, the C indicates that his Port Division was Chatham (the other two are Portsmouth and Devonport), and the K indicates his trade, Stokers and Mechanicians. As 1957 is relatively recent you might consider appealing for information on some of the Forces website such as biscuitsbrown and Forces Reunited (or similar). Denis.

What are the exact details on the marriage certificate. Does it give his rank and service number? Is his address stated as of HMS XXXX What is his occupation? Pete

So you'll not find his record on the PRO site. from his rank on the marriage certificate you will be able to tell if he was commissioned. This site has details of what records are held and who has them. sadly unless you are next of kin it appears unlikely that you'll get any luck. You'll need to replace the * with dots. http://www.royal-naval-association*co*uk/rna21.html

Hi Dotty, although the record above say to just that year, these are only the ones available to search 'online'. The records will still be held at kew and hopefully you should be able to get his service records from there. Suzanne X

What year was the marriage? From the PRO website - 'You can now search and download the service registers of more than 500,000 seamen who joined the Royal Navy between 1873 and 1923.' http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/royal-navy-service.asp Records cost £3.50 and contain a wealth of information.
