romany and german ancestors help please

can anyone tell me where to search for romany/gipsy census information i am at a complete loss as to where to start and how would i find family that come to england from germany during the middle 1800s when all i have is a surname .

There is a site called 'passing through' which has census and parish records of travellers, gypsies etc. Caroline

For a brief period, captains of ships entering British ports were required to declare the names of foreigners on their ships. The records are held at the National Archives but it would require you to go there and search through boxfuls of forms. You'd need to know the year of arrival or it would be a mammoth task. Details are on the NA website.
