Can anyone advise me on finding info on John Bruce who was sent to trial 2 Jan 1837 at Huntingdonshire, sentence 7 years transportation to New South Wales, the ship he arrived on in Oct 1837 was James Pattison. I have searched Old Bailey records. I have reason to believe he is my g g grandfather. I don't know what his 'crime' was.

Hi Molly This is John Bruce's freedom certificate index, it looks like you can order it but it is expensive. Surname Firstname Alias Vessel Year CFNo Date SRRef Film Remarks Order BRUCE John James Pattison 1837 44/0502 4 Apr 1844 4/4390 1016 TL 42/109 This is from the state records of New South Wales site. http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/searchform.aspx You could try looking at the quarter sessions if they survive for that period and area. The local record office should be able to point you in the right direction. Also if you have an idea which jail he was in see if the log book has survived, I had a wealth of information about my ancestor from the prison log book. Regards Gail.
