have you tried lots of surname variations? I could not find James Eccles in Manchester, because he is indexed under James E Cales (1871 Eyckles, 1881 Eccls, 1891 Eckles, so I got used to hunting) He might be away at school, even quite some distance from home, visiting his grandparents or other rellies. (or he might have just been left out) Try just first name, birth date, birth place - you might have to scroll through several pages. Remember not everyone gave the correct birthplace, either because they did not know, or did not want anyone else to know. If he was at school, maybe he just said where his family was currently living. If you post his details, I will have a look too, I love a good treasure hunt Regards Di

hi, thanks for the quick replies! Well, its my great grandad im after. Denis Galvin. I know from family that his and his sons (my grandad) names were often mispelt (dennis) He died in 1958 aged 67. His parents were Stephen and Mary and lived in Denaby Main area in south yorks - We found his death registry ok, he went onto marry (Deborah Goodwin) and stayed in the area as my grandad and his siblings were born in the denaby area. (4 children altogether - Mary, John, Denis and Thomas) He was born 1890 in denaby. hope thats enough to go on - ive done surname and first name variations on ancestry and bmd and obviously need a second pair of eyes :) thanks for your offers of help, they are much appreciated from a newbie like me. j x

Ive tried searching with no name and just the birth year +/- 2 years and Denaby as the birthplace, but not come up with anything that could have been mistranscribed from his name. Have you looked for his grandparents or uncles and aunts. Perhaps he was visiting them and was transcribed with their name, or perhaps both where he was staying and his parents thought that the other ones would put him on the census, but neither did. He would be old enough to be working away from home at 10 or 11, so could be mistranscribed with an employer's name by mistake. Other than that, perhaps he was just missed off altogether. Sorry, not much help. Kath. x

Thanks kath for your help, im really grateful. He must have been left out, ive managed to find everything i can for him and i can find his wife (my great grandma) no probs. I know in time he married and used to work on the railways - my mum can remember going to see him at work when she was little :) i only remember one of his children and that was my great aunt - my grandad and the others died before i was born. Still, I will plough through and go and see what his parents were up to - like most mining familes they went where the work was. thanks again, J x

I have a similar problem - my great-grandma isn't on the 1901 census, but her parents and one sibling is. I know she was alive because she didn't get married till 1903. I did have a theory she might have been out of the country for some reason, but as yet I have no idea where she was. Hopefully she'll turn up. I've also had cases of missing siblings that turned out to be on the next sheet on the census return.

If you cant find it on Ancestry, try the 1901 on-line search. The two indices are completely different, and Ancestry still has lots of errors and omissions. I have found several names this way that just don't appear on Ancestry, or else are hopelessly mis-indexed

I can't Find my Granny either or her sister. Parents and other sisters were there but no second and third daughters. Where were they... hardly off sunning themselves in the South of France! Both were alive as Granny got married in 1904 and sister went to Canada.
