Thank you everyone for your help. I couldn't find James in the 1861 census, although I went right through the Winkfield census, could job it was a small village. 1871 no james Hull. but I did find Arthur Hull 1859c as stepson to David Street with mother Eliza. This one has been on my mind for the past few months, and strangely enough I have just got in contact with a daughter of my father's cousin, and she seems to think this is the Gt Grandfather I'm searching. I'm waiting for the birth cert which I ordered on line, as it had a G R O Ref. What puts doubt in my mind is, that on the 1881 census the name is changed to HILL (as sometimes it does get altered) and he lives 5 doors from my gt grandmother who he married, in Whitton Middx. Then again in 1891 and 1901 and his name is James Hull from Winkfield, Berks. I did find a David Hull b 1940c in Bray .Berks. But no James connected to him. I think I'll right to the Berkshire Records Office and see what they can do. Cheers everyone, Goodnight.

Just for the record You cannot purchase a BMD certificate at a RECORDS office. BMD certs are only available from REGISTER offices. OC

1861 census does not have a James born in Berkshire 1859+/-1, whose father's name is David. I can see him on 1891, married with family........but not on any earlier census Reg

Hi Maggie, I'm sure you could purchace a birth cert. here, worth a try. Berkshire Records Office 9 Coley Avenue, Reading RG1 6AF Tel:01189 015132 The Berkshire Records Office (BRO) holds various records including baptism, marriage and burial registers from the 16th century onwards for most Berkshire parishes and copies of some registers for the Slough area. They also hold GRO indexes for 1837 to 1997. Cheers Jim Leitch

Did you use the full ancestry index or the partial one?The partial one is less complete than freebmd. Also as he was born pre 1875 he may not have been registered. Glen

On FreeBMD I put in a search for 1856-1860 Berkshire - James Hull and one came up for Cookham and one for Wokingham. I do not know where Winkfield is but if you ordered birth certificate you could say you only wanted it if it was the right father's name. Irene
