Child described on successive censuses as: Stroke on left side from birth Imbecile - feeble minded She made it to at least the age of 11 Anyone out there got any idea what might have been wrong with her? Sheila

How very insulting ,but thats what they called peeps in those days who might be just a penny short of a shilling Or deaf so couldnt speak or had some sort of impediment

Could be Cerebral Palsy, known in those days by the name Spastic

If she was one of mine I would get the certificate, but as she's a mere twig on someone else's tree and I'm on a limited budget that's not going to happen on this occasion. Sheila

The description could be accurate - possibly paralysed on one side due to stroke just after birth. Anne

I don't think the enumerator intended to be insulting. They were the proper medical terms of the day. Kath. x
