Can anyone with a fresh mind shed any light on this mystery? My mum's oldest aunty married a man who Mum can only recall as being named 'Sis' Dawson. The aunty in question was named Charlotte Eizabeth Rowland, known as Liz and my mum thinks she was married later in life. Aunty Liz was born in 1889 and I have been up and down the marriage index from 1910 up to 1940 and can't find her. Even tried putting Dawson in and searching them up to 1940. Has anybody got the smallest clue about what 'Sis' might be short for?

Are you sure it wasn't Cecil? Have you tried finding her death and working back? Peter

Thanks for the siblings information. I've come up with a Charlotte Dawson died aged 86 in Belper in 1965, which I thought might be her, but that puts her age ten years out. Since they had no children, is it possible that someone might have registered her death believing her to be a different age to her actual one? My other confusion is that she was Charlotte Elizabeth, so should that mean she is registered as Charlotte E Dawson rather than just Charlotte or does that not matter? I've found all the other siblings and their spouses but I will have to keep hunting, especially for 'Sis'. I thought maybe Francis but there aren't any matching Francis Dawsons and my mum can't really remember how old he was.

The fact that she had a second forename may not have been known by the person who registered her death........ Reg

I might try looking for her as Elizabeth Dawson, too. As I say, my mum knew her as Liz and they had no children so it's possible someone assumed she was just Elizabeth. And the search goes on.

I will try Cecil as well - always a possibility. I had no idea there were so many Dawsons! This must be what happens when your relatives know people by pet names - my dad had an aunty Ursh (Ursula - but that was easy enough to find) and my mum has not only this Cis but an Aunt 'Gin' who turned out to be called Elizabeth Jane! Isn't it confusing when people are known by their second Christian name? Mum's cousin Daphne was actually named Lucy Daphne! I'd never have found her if I hadn't been told she was born on Valentine's Day.
