Thanks for all the tips, yes it is becoming addictive. I know both my great grand parents are buried in my local village cemertery, but one grave has no head stone, will the guy who looks after the cemertery haver details, or should I go to the village church? Alan |

Hi Alan Welcom to our world....A.T.D.F. Addicted to dead folk d o t c o m. lol. The best tip I can give you is.....Always know that you can ask for help on here. How ever silly you think the question is, it's prob nothing thats not been heard of before on here. So dont be shy. Ask away.... C'mon, lets get you started?...Have you got your fathers birth cert? Or do you know his birthdate? If so, whats his fathers name and where was your father born? What year was your father born? From that you will need to get your mother and fathers marriage details. We can help you to find this... Give as much info as you know when asking for help, however small. Always make a mental note of the witnesses to a marriage. I once found out that a witness to the mariage of my great gran was a daughter of her FIRST marriage which I knew nothing about! I now know she was married 3 times!!!! One more tip...never ever pay more that £7 when buying a cert. You can buy them online here....... http://www*gro*gov*uk/gro/content/ Change the * for a dot... Remember Alan...It's no good having hundreds of names going all the way back to 1066 but not sure if they are the correct ones. I'd rather have only a few names but be SURE they are all mine. Have fun...dont be shy to ask for help....make friends....and lie to your wife about the cost of buying the certs! lol My partner still thinks they are freeeeee LOL Ssshhhhhh. Gerri :-)) One more thing......Dont be shocked to find out that most people diddnt marry untill they were either pregnant or already had a child tut! tut! ;-) My Mothers Father couldnt look me in the eye or accept me as his grandaughter when i was a child cos i was born out of wedlock....I now know HE too was born out of wedlock! and his Father before him too! |

If any of these males married later in life, their marriage cert will give father's name. You will then be able to narrow down the options on the census. Good luck. You do know that this hobby is exceedingly addictive, don't you? Janice |

The only certain way to do it is to get certificates for each birth and marriage working backwards to 1837, unless you can get to the relevent Record Office and find the entries in Parish Registers. Before 1837 it's Parish Records, wills, and so on. |

First, have you obtained your father's birth certificate and his father's birth certificate? |

Hi I'm a newbie to family trees so any help would be appreciated. I have created a tree going back to my great grand parents, but I am not sure if I have the correct ones, I have searched the 1901 census but most of my male relations are single on the census so how do I know which is my relation.
