For the software you need only pay £6 for a copy of Family Tree Maker. The big advantage to a programme installed on your pc is that you do not need an internet connection to add/change/edit your tree. And you never have to let someone view your tree, you can just send a file of the part of your tree they are connected to. The programmes like FTM are 'stand alone' programmes, an internet,server,website problem can stop you accessing your tree and if the sites crash and your tree vanishes you are in trouble. FTM does not rely on internet/servers or sites to allow you to build your tree. You don't even need to be online to alter your tree in any way.

Ah, someone who speaks s l o w l y and c l e a r l y for us newbies to understand. Many thanks! I'll disappear off to download your recommendations and check they can join up 2 branches before investing too much time in data entry.

Family Tree Maker is a program, a very good one that a lot of people use, it can be bought quite cheaply. The newest version is v16 but 2006 and 2005 are both available cheaper and I'm more than happy with the 2005 version I use. Legacy is another that can be downloaded for free and also free is PAF (personal ancestral file) from the Family Search website. Sam x

Slowly please I'm a Newby - like today! GR = Genes Reunited? FTM = Family Tree Maker? I'd figured out GR can't do it. Which FTMs (?) can do it and does anyone have a specfic recommendation for a freeware/shareware/cheap one?

Maz The only way the GR tree accepts an interfamily marriage without duplicating names is from an uploaded Gedcom. Your FTM file would upload and everything would show correctly but you can't enter it correctly through the GR tree builder. Glen

I'm a Newby with the exact same problem. My Great-Grandfather and my wife's Great-Great-Grandfather were brothers so our 'branches' join up. I'm pleased to learn I could not tell the tree programme on this site to do this - it was driving me crazy trying! So, do any of the commercially available programs allow one to do this and does anyone have particular recommendations?

I am afraid the only way to do it is to export your tree to another programme make the necessary corrections and then reload it. Personally I have given up on here and just add a message to say this person appears twice on my tree. One set of greatgrandparents were cousins and it goes downhill from there. Anne

As far as I know, Maz, you still cannot do this on your Genes tree, despite the recent improvements. Yet another reason why I don't add to my GR tree. OC

I have two branches of Bell - I have now confirmed that they join up. I have William and have entered his parents, I have George on another line. I know this has been answered before, but can someone tell me please, can I link George in myself, or do I have to send a message to Genes asking them to do it??!! Thank you ! Maz. XX
