There are quite a few books out about old Liverpool one of them is by Freddie O'Connor, I work with his daughter and the information in it and photo's are incredible. Even though I live in Liverpool after reading his book I now see Liverpool in a different light. sadly a lot of the old buildings have gone. I visited that site Old mersey times and its a briliant site learnt a couple of things on there. St Johns Gardens which is the back of St Georges didnt know that was once a buriel ground and in the summer Ive often sat there, you would think they should put plaque up there about it. Probably the Council dont know anything about the site or they are frightened too. Regards Yvonne x |

Yvonne, the church of St John Old Haymarket (JOH 283 ) Registers: Early (bap, bur, ) 1767- 1812. Once stood behind St George's Hall, hence the name St John's Gardens. In the early 1930s my father was working there mending the pathways, and they dug up lots of bones and skulls. I do hope I haven't put anyone off having their lunch there ? |

Thanks Poirot for your information, it would have been amazing to find the bones there. No still hasnt put me off sitting there definately not, I shall now sit there pondering about the bodies probably informing anyone who speaks to me about what is below us lol. Makes you wonder what else is lying beneath Liverpool. Yvonne |

There is a book recently published called Criminal Wirral, written by Daniel Longman. Dan is a member here, and only 18, and a contributor to YFT magazine! It is a really good book and has photos from then and now through it. It is exploring crime in the area, but it is fascinating. Waterstones have it and will be happy to order it. I'd recommend it. |

Thanks June, but I just haven't the time. I wrote up my own family history many years ago, and now my children want copies ! I don't claim to know everything about Liverpool but I have learned a lot since I started researching at the Liverpool Record office in the early 1970s ( in the old fashioned way) long before computors and the internet. Since then I have helped people from all over the world find their ancestors in Liverpool, ( and other areas) For anyone just starting off It is so much easier today ! especially on this site where they get spoon fed. My advice is do your own research, it is so much more interesting and satisfying. I am coming up to 75 soon and still trying to get my head around my computor ! but I do enjoy helping people whenever I can with the knowledge I have gained. |
