Just wondering whether somebody could point me in the right direction? All i know about my Grandfather is that in 1943 at the Age of 21 he married a scottish woman. However on the certificate his address is listed as Albemarle Street, South Shields and 'now engaged in War Services' - with profession as Royal Marines. How can I find our more - anybody know a good place to start?

Hi Graeme I don't suppose by chance his service number had been put on his marriage certificate had it, I was very lucky as my father's service number was on his marriage certificate in 1942. The National Archives site is always a good place to look for guidance, and there is a section on Royal Marines service records. Good luck Regards Gail

I assume from the information you have given that you already have a copy of the marriage certificate. From memory I cannot recall what information is held on a Scottish marriage cert. Do you get father's name recorded? Did your grandfather survive the war? If not the CWGC website may record his burial details. From your grandfather's age at time of marriage you can estimate his year of birth. The index of birth for England and Wales can be searched on a couple of sites (you'll need to pay!) However, if you post the name and the few details that you already know you may find a member who can search on your behalf. Just because grandfather's address at time of marriage was in South Shields it doesn't mean that he originated from there. However, just in case he was born there you could check for a birth in the BMD indexes for the NE of England. Some can be found online. Try http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ Pete
