I would think may be a 'working jeweller' is someone who actually makes items, rather than a 'jeweller' - like some of mine, who were basically shop holders?

A jeweller's apprenticeship was either 5 or seven years. An apprenticeship could start at the age of 7 (!) so, yes, perfectly possible that he was fully trained by the age of 23. OC

Hello, does anybody have any idea what a 'working jeweller' would be, is it any different from an ordinary jeweller? Also, this is the occupation given by my great grandfather at the birth of his first child in 1857. On his marriage certificate in 1855, his occupation is just 'jeweller'. My main question is this: when he married at the age of 23, his occupation is jeweller. Is he likely to have been fully trained at the age of 23? I cannot find him on the 1851 census when he would be 19 - does anybody have any idea which occupation or training would lead to him being a jeweller at the age of 23? If anybody wishes to have a look for him! here are his details: David Albert Hargreaves, born 1832, found on IGI as Daniel Albert Hargraves, father Thomas Hargreaves, mother Esther Hyde. From memory, I think they married in 1830. In 1841 Thomas is a widow, living at Boad Street, provision dealer, aged 30, born in County. David is with him, aged 9, born in County. I am starting to think that perhaps he is in the damaged census of Manchester. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance. Carol
