Helen Traceline is a Government run department and they have access to information, such as National Insurance numbers, tax records etc, which are closed to the rest of us. OC

What will it cost? (copied from Traceline web site) Our fees are kept as low as possible as we are a non-profit making service and only seek to recover our costs. They are payable in two parts: Processing and searching Our standard fee for processing your application and undertaking a comprehensive search is £30.00 including vat. For an additional £10 including vat we also offer a priority service – this guarantees that your search and our response to you is completed within five working days. A full date of birth must be provided for this service. Letter forwarding If our search is successful the fee for offering to forward a letter is £25.00 including vat. Please note, we are unable to offer our letter forwarding service in cases involving current or former partners where contact could prove disruptive.

I'm thinking of trying them to find out about my mother's father (my own searching has been a bit of a dead end), he's probably dead now, but do you think they would be able to help find out if he had anyother kids etc? Liz

Hi Helen, Yes I have used Traceline, Twice in fact. They are great. It takes a while and is a long process but they got there in the end both times for me. The first time I used them I was looking for my dad. All i knew was his name and dob, They found him living in North Wales, and as I lived in London at the time, He could have been on the moon! When they found him I wrote a letter which they passed on to him, He then contacted me. They will not give out any details about the person being sought unless they have permission. It was the greatest day ever when my dad rang me up, I had not heard from him for 20 years! That was 6 years ago and we are still in touch. The second time I used them was to look for my grandfather. They did find him, But could only tell me that he had passed away already. Not so great, but they did what they could. Pat x
