Not sure if this is the right board - and the subject will no doubt have been discussed before. I have paid out a fortune for various certificates and there are many, many more I would like to see. All my local info is held by our registrar. Should I have to pay to get extracts?. We hear a lot about freedom of information acts. Should this not apply here? Locally, I can go to the cemeteries and have free looks at all their records. My feeling is that the same should apply to BMDs. Happy days |

Although I would love to be able to look at what I want, for free, I think my reasoned answer has to be 'NO'. Civil Registration is funded by our taxes. If I was not interested in family history, I would be annoyed to have my taxes raised to cover increased costs engendered by thousands of people wanting a free look at various certs. In fact, if you use local Register Offices, you very nearly can get the info for free - well, you can weed out the wrong ones at no cost to yourself. OC |

If you have to get a lot, AND get to know your local superintendant well, sometimes they show you a book to 'check' it's the 'right' entry, and ask you to make notes until you are sure it is the one you need to purchase! For 'local' marriages, I use the record office and PR. You can do loads in half a day. Jay |

Thank you ladies. Not much free info to be gleaned for me locally, but not to worry. Many thanks for your interest. Nice thought Teresa - hope the sun is shining for your good-self as well. Best wishes Happy days |
