on one census a person is born in one place in another theyre born in another?

Hi Rose (sorry was off on the census's again lol) Well my grgrgr nanna's brother said in 3 census's he was born in Eastwood then it changes to Nottingham and its not the first time :( my great great grandad Webb gr gr nanna Webb and gr gr aunts and uncles on the 1861 census it said they were British subjects !!!!!!!!!! but on later ones its saying they were born in either Londo or the Isle of Portland or surrey sussex all over down south just wondered why they do that?

The closer you are to the date and place of birth the more likely you are to find accurate information for the person concerned. By the time a person is 70+ and have moved from a little village to a large city the less accurate their ages and where they came from are likely to be. Ages can be 10 years or more 'out' (presumably they looked good for their age) and there is a greater likelihood of them providing a more generic description of where they were born - ie a locality rather than a specific hamlet or village. Additionally, it often depended on what they were asked by the enumerator!! Victoria
