I'm glad this thread has been nudged up again. Since the last time I added a reply, I have obtained by husband's grandfather's medical record from Winterton House, and I'm really pleased with them. They were photocopies but there was also a small photocopied photograph of him (not very good quality) but we hadn't seen a photo of him and hadn't expected to. The records give a good description of him, his state of health on admission, details of medications, the eventual decline, date of death, post mortem etc. In the first place I contacted Durham County Record office. This page gives details of what records survive from Winterton:- http://www.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/register.nsf/vwebdeposits/4D6085C9415EE792802569050052C328?opendocument Kath. x |

You will find this page very informative. I got some records from here by contacting the record office: (address on the page) http://www.institutions.org.uk/asylums/england/DUR/county_durham_asylums.htm Cheers, Horatia |

Not sure about 1927, but in 1944 it was called Winterton House, Sedgefield. My husband's grandfather died there. Kath. x |

Yes...I think it may have been called Winterton hospital earlier. It say's written permission should be obtained to view the record's but it dose'nt say by who or where the record's are kept. Sue |

One of my ancestor's was in this hospital and died there around 1927. I have heard that they kept really good record's, some with photo's attached. I wondered if anyone else had tried to access these record's or knew anything about them ? Thanks..........Sue |
