Hi Lunar, Don't know when they started but it is very difficult to obtain these from USA. Their system is not so easy as ours. The SSDI has records of deceased persons who possessed social security numbers and whose deaths were reported to the SSA. for death benefits by a family member, for example. If someone is missing from the list, it may be that the benefit was never requested or that the form was filled in incorrectly BMD is held in the State Archives for each State This is the info I have for trying to get mine from Maine, I expect other states are the same. There are very few online. WHAT DO I DO IF I CANNOT VISIT THE MAINE STATE ARCHIVES? With limited resources, the Archives cannot conduct genealogical research, though it can provide copies of specific records. For researchers unable to visit, we provide a list of professional genealogists , not connected with the Archives. Search our on-line databases through Maine Archives Interactive. Microfilm copies of vital records (birth, death, and marriage) are held by the Archives from before 1892 (incomplete) and from 1892-1955. They are also available on microfilm at the following institutions: Years: Pre-1892, and 1892-1955 are now available at (North to South): The Library , University of Maine at Presque Isle Fogler Library , University of Maine, Orono Penobscot Marine Museum , Searsport Maine State Library , Augusta (more extended hours than the Archives) Maine Historical Society , Portland Portland Public Library , Portland Springvale Public Library , Springvale Village, Sanford This page was last updated March 3, 2006 Not very helpful is it? It is expensive too!! Regards Kat

Have you looked for variations of the name? A couple of my ancestors 'poofed' in Canada and I found them with incorrect spellings. Can we help you look?

Lisa, I've tried wild cards and soundexes but they don't show up. 2 of the 3 son's show on the SSDI but the youngest doesn't. The surnames TOURNAY usually mis-spelt in the USA as TOURNEY - have tried Tourn?y, Tourn* Torn*, Torn?y and soundexes of them which include Thorn and Tierney. Will have to assume that the missing persons are either not yet transcribed or they were or registered. I know Ancestry does not have the full SSDI as rootsweb lists people that Ancestry doesn't. Thanks anyway

Lunar, perhaps you can search the 1920 census by address, but if you can't -- you could write down the neighbours of the Tournay's in 1910 and search for them in 1920, hoping your rellies and the neighbours didn't move. Hope that makes sense. A friend subscribes to Ancestry, if I can help you look? Please let me know if I can help in any way. Lisa

Thanks Lisa, am making the most of 3 days free Ancestry world access so have 23 hours left to find them. So far the only patten is that they are living in Oneida, New York in 1900 and 1910, in 1892 they were in Herkimer, New York. Will try again in the morning with fresh eyes.
