Thanks Snowdrop for posting the very useful info. I actually have Dade records from a parish not listed, so hopefully there are more out there that aren't on the list. Kath, I haven't been to Felixkirk yet but it sounds lovely and how kind of someone to make a plan of the graves. If only each churchyard had a plan our lives would be much easier wouldn't they!! Lyn

Hi Lyn, Funny that you should mention Felixkirk. I'd never heard of the place, but a couple of weeks ago my son had to go there to get some work done on his Landrover, so I went with him. It's a lovely little place with a beautiful church. Someone had gone to the trouble of drawing out a complete map of the churchyard with the names of everyone in the graves on it, and it is on the wall inside the church. I had never seen anything like it and would be very useful to anyone with ancestors buried there. The pub also do excellent meals (if a little pricey!!). Kath. x p.s. sorry to interupt your thread.

So, if an IGI search one of these days shows an ancestor of yours being baptised, married or buried in any of the parishes listed between about 1775 and 1812, head off to find the original registers and the BTs, or at least the films. You are in for a real treat…

For anyone else interested in the Dade Registers taken from: http://www.pontefractfhs.org.uk/Daderegisters.htm The goldmine of Dade registers Researched and written by Kathryn Senior Brophy This article appeared in The Bridge 2003 Sooner or later when doing family history in Yorkshire, researchers come across Dade registers. You might not know their name or anything about them, but you instantly know they are something very special. I saw my first one at the Borthwick Institute in York, scrolling through microfilms looking for entries in the parish registers of Bolton Percy and its surrounding parishes, following the line of my maternal great grandmother, Eliza Hannah Wright. In some of the registers in the late 1700s, instead of reading the usual: 14 Aug 1782 John Smith, son of John baptised I was coming across entries like this in the baptism register of Bilborough in the Ainsty of York: Dec 12 1779 Samuel Cartwright, 5th son of George Cartwright (farmer upon Haxby Moor, son of John and Mary Cartwright of Rufford) and Jane Cartwright (daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Gelderd of Hafs Craven). Born Nov 7 1779 And this in the baptism register of Bolton Percy: March 21 1803 (baptised) Richard Kirby, son of Robert Kirby, a farmer of Streethouses and Mary daughter of John Wright, born March 15 1803 And this in the burial register of Bolton Percy: Jun 7 1808 Mary Cartwright, daughter of Elizabeth Cartwright, Appleton Roebuck, aged 6 months, convulsive fits And this in the burial register of Long Marston, Ainsty of York: March 29 1796 Robert Fall, farmer of Hutton, son of Arthur Fall. Died March 26, buried at Marston. Aged 81 This one is my favourite – the others listed turned out not to tie into my tree but Robert Fall was my 5th great grandfather, his father Arthur my 6th great grandfather. So what are Dade registers? Basically, very detailed registers that contain far more information even than the standard baptism and burial entries that all parishes were required to adopt after George Rose’s Act in 1812. They were named after the Rev. William Dade, a Yorkshire clergyman born in 1740 who went to St. John's College, Cambridge. From 1763 until his death in 1790, he was curate, vicar and rector of five parishes in York and two in the East Riding of Yorkshire. He was far ahead of his time in seeing the value of including as much information on individuals in the parish register as possible. In 1770 he wrote in the parish register of St. Helen's, York: 'This scheme if properly put in execution will afford much clearer intelligence to the researches of posterity than the imperfect method hitherto generally pursued.' Dade's influence spread and the term Dade register has come to describe any parish registers that include more detail than expected for the time. In 1777, Archbishop William Markham decided that the Dade scheme should be introduced throughout the Diocese of York. The baptismal registers were to include child's name, seniority (eg. first son), father's name, profession, place of abode and descent (ie names, professions and places of abode of the father's parents), similar information about the mother, the infant's date of birth and baptism. The application of this system was somewhat haphazard and many clergymen, particularly in the more populated areas, resented the extra work involved in making these lengthy entries. The thought of duplicating them for the Bishop’s Transcripts put many of them off and some refused to follow the new rules. Several letters of complaint were printed in the York newspapers of the time, and the scheme suffered when the Archbishop made it obvious he wasn’t out to punish any vicars who could not comply. Fortunately for family historians, many parishes did take up the new system. Some applied it to baptisms only, and not the burials, others provided even more information than required. Some made an effort with the main registers, but did not duplicate all the information for BTs. It is also possible that some BTs might contain Dade entries while the main register does not: no survey has yet been done but the Borthwick Institute in York recommends to any researcher looking at parishes in the Ridings of Yorkshire to always check both sources between 1770 and 1812, just in case. The Rev Shute Barrington instigated the use of slightly simpler registers, sometimes referred to as ‘Barrington Registers’ from about 1783 in the Diocese of Sarum (which covered areas in Wiltshire, Bristol and Berkshire) whilst Bishop of Salisbury and in Durham from 1798, when he became Bishop of Durham. 180 English parishes have Dade registers. Hi Just found this statement on Genuki by Roy Stockdill on the newbies guide:- 'There is no overall guide to which parishes had Dade Registers but you will certainly know them when you see them'. If you do find them let us know because I would like to see a list. Regards Gail
