It is an Old Testament name which suggests either Jewish faith, or more likely, a nonconformist one. The Church of England for many years, did not allow baptism with Old Testament names, because they were not Christian. OC

Not necessarily Abraham is of Hebrew origin...........but I have at least four in my tree who were baptised into the Church of England.......... You may need to find out if he was baptised......failing that, in which denomination his parents married......... Reg

I am researching a family member who was born in 1882 and who has the name 'Eliam' as one of his 3 forenames. I have 'googled' the name and it indicates that it is of Hebrew origin and means 'Gods People' or 'God is my Nation'. At the risk of appearing dull in such matters, can someone confirm whether this suggests a Jewish background or could it be from some other religious faith such as Baptist.
