I'm looking for the Flanagan family on the 1871 census and I'm stuffed if I can find them. I have found them on the 1881 with Flanagan spelt FLANNIGAN and the info is as follows :- Mary, Head, 42, Widow, , Cardroom hand, Preston Elizabeth, Dau, 13, Scholar, Bolton Rose A, Dau, 11, Scholar, Fulshaw Thos., son, 7, Scholar, Bolton Ellen, Dau, 4, Scholar, Bolton I am pretty sure this is my family as everything else fits but I know there was a daughter before Elizabeth called Sarah Flanagan, born 1862/1863 but unfortunatley, I don't know where!! The father was Thomas and I believe he was a Carter but again, I've no idea where he came from. He must have died between 1877-1881 as Mary is down as Widow on the 1881 and the last child was born 1877. I think I have found his death in Bolton - it would fit as the last child was born in Bolton, it's the following year and he was 52 so that isn't too old for him to be Mary's hubby. The other possibilities in Lancashire are way too old. So on the 1871 Census I would expect to find Thomas, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth and Rose. Any help would be greatly appreciated - I've been looking for them for days and my eyes are boggling. I've probably looked for them for so long that I can't see the wood for the trees!!

Thanks for that Brenda. It's a possibility, but until I find the birth of one of the kids to get a birth certificate, I have no way of checking. I've made a note of it though and will keep it in mind. Thanks for looking for me. It's much appreciated. Andrea.

I've tried every variation I can think of and have so far found nothing on 1871 for them. It happens sometimes, if the image is too poorly faded etc to read, it could be that it hasn't been transcribed. I would guess the next move for you would be the Bolton RO as they will probably have the census info on fiche or something.

Thanks for all the replies. Cheryl I don’t think that is my family as I know the father was definitely Thomas and not Cornelius and also, for Rose to be there, there should also be Sarah aged 8 or so and also Elizabeth aged about 3. Liz I have also found that birth for Sarah and think it could be a possibility. I know the death isn’t right though as I have the death certificate already. She died in Blackburn Workhouse in September 1899 – Unfortunately the death certificate doesn’t have any birth details on it – I was gutted when I got it!! Cheryl With the Hannagan / Flannagan – I agree that it does say Flannagan and not Hannagan. However.... Mary Ann should be older as the 1881 census has her born c1839, and Sarah still isn’t there. Hmm. I have now found a possible birth for an Elizabeth Flannigan born in Bolton in 1867 so I guess I will just have to send off for that and hope that the parents are Mary and Thomas. Many thanks to you all for your help. It’s much appreciated. Andrea.

Apologies for taking so long to reply. I haven't checked GR for a couple of days - problems with PC. The family on the 1881 census IS my family but I've found them already. The birth for Thomas I have also found. The marriage for Elizabeth Flannagan is also the right one - she married Patrick Stanton. The birth for Ellen is a possiblity. I'm not sure about the wedding yet as I have nothing to point me in that direction but I've made a note of it. Just so that you don't think I've been wasting everyone's time - I didn't have most of this info when I posted the message but have found it since. I'm still not convinced about the family in Kirkham as the ages don't tally at all and also there is a Catherine and I don't think there was a Catherine. Thanks for pointing out that it said Rose was born in Kirkham and not Fulshaw!! I read it wrong. Also, the birth for Rosa IS one of mine - it's just a couple of generations away!! This Rosa (actually Rose Ann) was my Grandad's sister. They were the easy ones to find!!! To all who have helped out - thank you soooo much. I'd be stuck without you all.
