Workhouse children were sometimes simply taken and sent to live abroad in Canada or Australia. You will be shocked at the extent of this - tens of thousands of children right up to the early 20th century. Try researching British Home Children and see if a name pops up.

Yes I have both birth certs, they were born in the same workhouse where the parents are in 1851. Catherine Otter married Basil Sandys in 1855 and she is listed with Basil and daughter Sarah born 1856 in 1861 and 1871. So no, they are not with them then. Basil Sandys dies in 1871 and then Catherine disappears as well. What a family, grrrrr

Hi Sue Do you have their birth certs, or do you know where they were born? Pen x Found the birth entry for Sands with the district of St Giles given. What was the new married surname? - perhaps they are using that one.

Sands Otter born 1853 and Eliza Otter born 1847, the children of William and Catherine Otter. I can't find either of these children on any census or deaths for them. William and Catherine are in St. Giles workhouse Middlesex in 1851. By 1861 William is dead and Catherine remarried. Anyone got any ideas as to whaat could have become of them.
