I suggest sending it to him to check anyway, just to put your own mind at rest. I thought I had done my first file ok, but when I sent it to Peter to check, he pointed out a couple of errors (and one which I disagreed with), but it told me what I needed to look out for. |

They all seem to do it differently it seems lol. I'm gonna wait to hear back from him, but I'm guessing he's probably at work, since he emailed me at 8am this morning lol |

Liz, when I did my first page I sent it to my coordinator to check first. Then he told me how to upload it. When you do get to upload it, it is surprisingly quick. |

I've just finished my first page, I must say that I found the BMDVerify a really nifty tool. Very cool. I'm waiting to hear back from Tony now to see if I send the page to him for checking or upload it straight to FreeBMD, on the page for registering for the syndicate it says the latter, but the email he sent me doesn't say what to do when it's complete, so I shall wait till I hear back from him I guess. I can't wait to do more, I really enjoyed it. Liz |

Thanks everyone, I'm waiting to hear from my syndicate co-ordinator and eager to get started on it. Teresa, I found that all that advice for transcribers, it's a lot to take in but I guess when you get going it will all slip into place. Pat, thanks for the offer of help, I'm currently chasing shadows through all the original death indexes on ancestry, and even when I find what I'm looking for I might not even know it. lol. Will pm with the information. Liz. |

Good luck Liz. I also transcribe for freebmd, have done for about 3 years. Has helped me improve my typing, which I learned at college too many years ago and also helped my computer skills too. Go for it!! |

Iam Liz, and I love it! I doesn't matter how much or how little you do, its a bit like Tescos, every little helps. There is lots of advice on the Transcribers area of FreeBMD, and plenty of support from your coordinator. You'll also be sent a program which is sooooo easy to use to put your transcriptions in, and another program to proofread them. (Very important this, I often find I have missed an entry when I proofread, especially the faded old birth document I was doing last night, a whole page of Ann Evans!) Go ahead, put your application in, it's theraputic and addictive. PS, there is a whole article of transcribing for FreeBMD in the Your Family Tree mag this month, showing some screenshots of the programs I mentioned. It's really easy. |

I`m doing census with FREECEN. Picked Yorks-Horsforth district as it was where I was born -but it`s the most populated area- I think in the world --only kidding in England. Ros |

Dear Liz I have just started doing it - just completed my first 10 pages! Thought I ought to do it seeing how often I use the site! My coordinator has been extremely helpful and friendly and I have really enjoyed doing it. You don't have to commit to a time or a certain number of pages and can work at your own speed. I really would recommend it. Hope you give it a go. Best wishes Maria |

Thanks for that, I am quite computer savvy and at the moment I have too much time on my hands (I'm single, no kids, unemployed and disabled so I don't have much of a life lol). As my own searches are giving me hassle, I thought this might be a good distraction as well as a way of helping to move things forward and help others in the same situation. I've had a lot of help off people on here in the past and it would be my way of paying it back I guess. I also like the idea of adding to my skill set for when I'm job hunting. John Brown? Oh god, it sounds as bad as my Smith family lol. Liz. |

Liz I did some transcribing for them a couple of years ago. I had a lot more free time then! I found it quite difficult to start with, after I had downloaded all the stuff you need I didn't know where to start! You do get a superviser to help you get started and mine was a tremendous help. If you are not computer literate like me it can be a bit daunting at first. You do need plenty of free time and good eyesight. My first batch was BROWN marriages, you can't imagine how many John Browns got married in 1884! I don't have time these days, but was glad to do my bit. Good Luck Carole xx |

I'm thinking of volunteering as I have quite a bit of free time on my hands. I was wondering if anyone does or has done this and if they had any experiences/recommendations on the subject. Thanks, Liz. |
