I don't have this in my family, but when I was researching a friend's family tree, her great, great grandmother never married and yet had three children of her own, and then took in two more as nurse children (foster kids), who stayed with the family all their lives until they were adults. Don't suppose we will ever know why. Kath. x

As Kathleen says, the Workhouse was the Social Security system of the day - if you fell on hard times, that is where you went. I think you need to get the BCs of the children to help you solve this mystery. OC

Hi Kath I know that she wasn't married as the Register for the admittance and discharge of her and her family always states her as single and she has the same surname as her parents. What I can't understand is why she would keep going and having more babies with this guy if they weren't together - and if he never once went into the Workhouse with them. Sounds like he's getting the cake AND eating it, if you get me. Seems very bizarre so I was wondering if anyone else had had anything like this or got any suggestions as to WHY she would do this to herself!!!

If you haven't found her on the census living with a man, then it is quite possible that she never married and had children with either the same man or several different men (it happened in those days just as much as it does now!!!). Perhaps it was the same man but he was already married. Perhaps she had casual jobs, and just went into the workhouse when she was out of work. Kath. x

I have a family going in and out of the workhouse between 1890 - 1909. There is a Mother with 5 children. When she first goes in she only has 2 children, then the next time she has 3 children and then she has 5 - but she is single. Why would a woman and her family keep going in and out of the workhouse but the father not go with them - and why on earth would this woman keep going back to this man and having more kids with him when they weren't married and he didn't go to the Workhouse with them?????? Suggestions pls because I'm at a loss - unless it was a different man every time - but surely she wouldn't do that and STILL not marry any of them??
