Hi, I have a question, can anybody help? My family show up in a particular parish register in Winchester in 1808 and after. The couple married in the Winchester parish in 1808, Their children were also baptized in the Winchester parish. I think I found the same family in settlement papers for that parish in 1817. The settlement papers say the family came from a Southampton parish. My question is can settlement papers be issued years after a family have arrived in their new parish? I had assumed that settlement papers were issued when a person or family moved from one parish to another, at the time of moving. Many thanks Lainey.

Hi I cant answer your exact question but.... I have the same problem but can not find any settlement papers for my family at all. My family was in Leicesterhire and the girl in the records office told me that very few settlement orders survived. Have you tried looking for other records that could be for this 'other' family to see if they did exist? Julie

It may be that the family moved away for a while and then moved back again. It may also be that only one set of many settlement papers have survived for this family. Lancashire has quite a good collection of Settlement papers, and some of my ancestors have about 10 sets, with matching removal orders! Have you looked on A2A? That is where I found many of mine. OC
