thanks for your suggestions, it good to know that you are working on the right line of enquiry. I will have to go and look at the local papers for that time and the parish regs are a new suggestion thanks yvette, let you know if i ever find anything!!

I think that there is a good chance that there may be some truth in the story. I would think that newspapers would be the best place to search though. Did the family come from a small village? You may find something in the parish records. Some village vicars couldn't resist giving their opinions on various happenings and may have added a few remarks if the deceased was his parishioner. People often 'upped sticks' and moved away to avoid trouble or to get away with non payment of rent. Gwyn

I agree with you victoria, it also seems like one of those family stories that we all have, and after investigation it turns out not to be true.

Hi Yvette, I would think that if there is any truth in the story it must have been a case of accidental death. There is no way a man could have gone home from the pub, bundled up his whole family and their belongings (even if they didn't have many) and disappeared without trace before the law appeared. If there was a fight in a pub there would have been at least one witness - the barman - who would have been able to point a finger at the missing protagonist/pugilist. The local newspaper could well have an article about the event and it may have been a catalyst in so far as the move to London is concerned. I can think of no other avenue to find out about this other than the paper since you have no name of the other person involved (letting you check the death registrations) and you don't know the year. Good luck Victoria

evening all! there is a story in my family which everyone appears to know quite independently of each other, even members who don't know each other. The story is that a gt gt gt grandfather came to london from suffolk because he had a fight with a man in a pub and the man died so he ran away to london. I would love to know if the story had any truth or not. I know that it would be hard to find out because the crime would have gone unpunished. My 3x gt grandfather did come to london around the 1860's with his family. I have thought about the newspaper archives and have also tried to google many different variations (clutching at straws!!) just wondered if any one had any other ideas. will be off line now so will check back later so thanks in advance yvette
