You can't download the tree as a GEDCOM so it isn't a backup as such. Plus you need an internet connection to view/add/delete the information.Without that connection, functioning servers and a host of other third party supplied bits working you have no access at all. You don't have any control over the information either, it is in a public forum on the internet and can be copied by anyone at anytime. As with most free things, it is very limited and the limitatations are in the favour of the provider, not you. Glen

If you add it to the OneWorldTree, anyone can edit it/ remove the information. If you create yourself a tree, you can invite other users to use it and also you can add links to census information for them.

Ancestry has two trees one world tree which is public and anyone can edit. I did have some relations on there but have removed them. Any one you find on one world tree needs to be checked very carefully but you may be able to get details of the person who entered the original tree and find a link. I think most of the names are still American. The new feature is their personal tree. I had a play with it. If you have an ancestry subscription and relatives in England and Wales it is useful as you can link census entries without having to download them. You can also add photos and sources. I like the time line for each individual. However it is quite laborious to enter information and at the momment you can't download a gedcom from there. They say that feature is comming soon. You can keep the tree private if you want and it is not added to one world tree. For ancestry members they are offering three free days world membership for starting a personal tree. Personally I found family tree maker much easier to use to back up my genes tree and I would also recommend tribal pages. Anne
