Just as an interesting exercise, you understand, could someone who has deleted their tree, try a name search for a person they have deleted? I am not clear in my own mind whether removing your tree results in the names of your relatives disappearing for ever - or whether they remain on the 'Master List' (which might explain all those bizarre hot matches - this person seems to have removed their tree) OC

Ann, Even if your rare German surnames were still in the search list, YOU would be the only person not able to see them. For some stupid reason GR has 'improved' searches by removing the searcher's own names from the results. I used to rely on being able to view my names in a list to see if there were any matches. It was much hotter than hot matches and I made many useful new contacts that way. What is the unusual German surname? I'll check to see if it comes up when I search for it. Tracey

Does anyone else feel as incredulous and angry, that we have to ask EACH OTHER these questions in order to find out how things work on here? Would it be beyond GR to put a tutorial on here - all other sites I belong to have clear instructions about what will show on a tree and what won't and where the information goes if you remove it. I am about to remove my GR tree anyway, but would really like to not have this sneaking suspicion that all 'my people' will still be on here in some way or another. OC

Long and maddening as the task may be, I'm also thinking of removing my tree when my subscription runs out in March, so I've now got the massive task of copying information about 1900+ relatives onto my computer. I don't have family tree software, but I've constructed a way of recording it on a word processing file. In case anyone finds it useful, this is an example. Mr. Hurst married Mrs. X Their children: Hurst 1 married Mrs. A Children of Hurst 1 and Mrs. A: A Hurst B Hurst Hurst 2 married Mr. S Children of Hurst 2 and Mr. S: Child 1 S Child 2 S Not very technical, admittedly, but I colour-code each generation (1 = red, 2 = orange, 3 = yellow etc) and indent each slightly. I find it really useful just to collect the information.

Hi Ann, I found no results for KANNGEISSER - which is how it should be. I did find, however, that the search bars are working differently than previously. Some of them cannot search on surname alone anymore meaning you have to put a firstname in. Others can search on surname only but finding them is hit or miss. This site is becoming impossible to use - you never know where the goalposts are going to be moved to next!

Can you think of ANY other service you would happily pay for, which had no instructions and no description of what it did??? A bit like buying a mobile phone, asking the shopkeeper for the instructions and him shrugging his shoulders and saying 'Go and ask someone else who's got one, and ask them how it works' OC

Hi Ann, Crikey, you're right about Ancestry playing up too. Glad to hear it is only temporary and not someone's ill-thought out idea of an upgrade! GR's monkey business coupled with half-term made me give up on genealogy for the time being. I've been checking the message boards for signs that the GR site is back to its pre-'improvement' level of usability. Seems that people have now resigned themselves to the worst. Sad really as this used to be one of the best sites. Looks like the malevolent spirits are having a field day at the moment ;-)
