I have had several families that have been difficult to find in some census years. If I exhaust all possibilities searching for the surname, I enter the person's Christian name, the country, county and parish and year of birth. It's rather boring going through all the results, but I have found several people this way. The mistake is usually a transcription error. Sometimes the transcriber's make very odd mistakes, and these can make it very difficult to find a person. Before using this method, I try all possible spellings/alternatives for the surname. For example, my Rickatson family have been hard to find. Sometimes they are 'Ricketson', sometimes 'Richardson', and also other variants. This is when the details you put in other boxes are important. Hope this helps some of you.
