GR should use the standard GEDCOM 5.5 which is standard to all good family tree programs and has been in use since 1996. I use FTM and always export my tree as GEDCOM 5.5 and GR has no throuble reading it, and when I export from GR, FTM reads the file without problems too. The simplest comparison I can make is saving a word document as a TXT file and opening it in word pad, note pad, MS Word or any other text processing program as it is a universal format. As I said I use FTM witch I love but do use Brothers Keeper when visiting my parents as I was given a free instillation disk. The Brothers Keeper program is ok but I find it fiddley as it gives everyone a number but there is no patten (e.g. 1 me, 2 maternal uncle, 3 paternal grandmother, ........ 156 father, 298 brother). If you type FREE GEN into the search box above the threads on here (tips) you should find a thread with linkd for free family tree software. Good luck |

Can anyone tell me which version of GEDCOM, GR imports/exports? Is it Basic, Standard, Gedcom 5.5, or GR Unique? I am experimenting with various PC packages including Legacy 6.0, Roots Magic etc., and currently find Legacy the best of the bunch with probably more features than I need, though biased towards USA users. I can't use FTM 'cos they don't support Win2000. What are the experiences and recommendations of GR members? |
