If you look ad the records you can see that the family were travelling all over the place, which reinforces Sylvia's argument. Place of birth and registration place are not necessarily the same, so the child could have been born in Fulham and registered in Hackney a month or two later.

Hi David, have you checked later census to see if place of birth stayed the same? People quite often didn`t know or couldn`t remember where they were born and just said a place they knew or had been to. If you know the parents names you could order the Hackney one specifying father or mother`s name check. Also registration wasn`t compulsory until 1875 so may not have been registered at all. Sylvia.

Thank You I am looking for the birth of Mary A Plested, shown on the 1851 census as 'Mary A Plested abt 1847 Fulham, Middlesex, England Daughter ' But the only one I can find about that time on free BMDs is in Hackney, Middlesex David

It would come under the Manor of Fulham in Middlesex
