Hi I have found entries where the vicar has written. This is the 2nd/3rd b***** child of Susan---- and in one case the vicar had written 3 names in the register of possible father's of the child. I wish I had made a note of it at the time. He had obviously seen these 3 men nipping in and out of the barn/dairy where the mother worked. Maureen |

Yes, I would say that the absence of a father's name meant the child was illegitimate. Reg |

Yes, it means she wasn't married AND that the Vicar was an unusually kindly fellow, not to write BASTARD in the PR. However, I have found that social class had quite a bit to do with whether your illegitimate children were described as Bastards or Natural Child - the higher up the local social scale, the more likely your offspring would be described as 'natural child'. Hi,i've found this baptism for my ancestor Elizabeth Gunnell Suffolk: Hollesley - Parish Registers (Christenings, Marriages, Burials), 1623-1812 Baptisms Baptisms Index.-Boult, Fayth, 72; Robert, 72 County: Suffolk Country: England 06 Feb 1794 Elizabeth natural child of Sarah Gunnell As it only states the mother does this mean that she was illegitimate? also why would they state that she was a natural child is this significant or is it just something they write. Thanks Hugs xx |
