I have a friend called Max - her real name is Marilyn, so Lall could be anything. Lol is Lorence/Lawrence for a man, maybe Lall is Lorraine for a lady (although Lorraine is quite a modern name for the 1800's)

Lally is actually a name in it's own right, according to a google search! Could it be short for Caroline? Jay

Thanks Reg & Jeanette, sorry I couldn't answer you earlier, I have just got in from work. I will try the BMD's to see what I can come up with, although I do feel that the name Lall is shortened or a nickname.

Hi Reg and Carol, thank you also for your comments. The names have all been found in my deceased father's family tree album, which he drew and handwrote. We discovered it at the weekend in a box in the attic which was always next to be sorted, and what a wonderful find it was. After researching Ancestry for surnames of marriages for some time, I have found that my father had them all written down. But one of the aunts names is Lall and unfortunately he has a ? next to who she married, so a complete mystery. The great aunt in question was born after 1901 so I can't search the census for her. Thanks for all your speedy replies.

Thanks Jane, that could be a point, a mistranscription. The family already had a Louisa, Katie which I found is really Catherine, Nellie which is Ellen, Lizzie for Elizabeth and the last one is listed as Lall ??

Tish An elderly Aunt (now long deceased) used to refer to her Aunt Lalla. It took me a long time to find after starting family history that her name was in fact Sarah. Presumably Lall or Lalla is a baby's effort at saying Sarah (or possibly Sally) and the name stuck for ever after. Hope this may help. Regards, Carol
