Hello Janet I had found this cert before on the Commonwealth Graves website, http://www.cwgc.org/ but as I said discounted it. I have emailed them telling them of the error and offering all the documents I have to prove it. Hopefully they can fix the error so that anyone else searching will find the correct info. But I think it is a bit late to correct the info on the mamorial itself :( Best wishes Maria

I think the information is taken from various sources, some of them not noted for 100% accuracy. If one of them is that series of books 'National Roll of the Geat War 1914 -1918' (which was never completed) I know that the book for Northamptonshire has some inaccuracies. One person is listed as dead - he wasn't, he came home and lived for many more years - a friend's grandad is recorded with incorrect details. So, the errors get copied from source to another - bit like taking as gospel the info passed on by others, without doing a bit of checking. Jay

I had recently added a query as on my great grandfather on here a few days below. I had received some info from my brother that I had thought must be incorrect. Please see below: My brother in the Uk had assured me that the entry below was indeed that of my great grandfather but I had trouble believing it. I knew my grandfather had died at see, the ship had been hit by a U Boat. I also knew he died in the engine room. ( family stories) This is the entry Name: PEARCE, JOSEPH Initials: J Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Donkeyman Regiment/Service: Merchant Navy Unit Text: M.V. Cedarbank (Glasgow) Age: 46 Date of Death: 21/04/1940 Additional information: Son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pearce. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 25. Memorial: TOWER HILL MEMORIAL The trouble for me was that my grandad would have been 50 not 46, and his parents were Mr and Mrs JOHN PEARCE not Joseph. Now it has been confirmed that it is the correct Joseph Pearce as my grandmother ( the daughter of Joseph) has given my brother the death cert and the certificate above. My point is all the details of age and parents are wrong on the cert. I just thought that this may be helpful for others who can't find the records they are looking for. Best wishes Maria
