Can anyone advise how I search for death/marriage that may have taken place in Cape Town, South Africa?

Hi Heather, Tracing your South African ancestors like the Irish ancestors is very difficult. There are no BMD indexes like the UK or even online anywhere as far as I know. SA government destroys paper returns for their census's. It's a catch 22 situation in ordering certs as you have to know the details before you can order. Certs are ordered from the Dept. of Home Affairs. However, I have found the SA national archives very useful. I even managed to find my grandparent's divorce date. They have seperate databases for each area - Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Orange Free State, Transvaal, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and then the national database. Website is www*national*archives*gov*za.
