Well, a photograph of them, at any rate. Inscribed 'Rose Chapman with Samuel, Hugh, Mary.' I went digging, and am rather proud I spotted them in 1861, at 27 Kildare Terrace, Paddington: Samuel Chapman, Head, married, 64, trader, born Essex, near Colchester Rose Chapman, wife, married, 45, born Scotland Rose Chapman, daughter, 10, scholar, Scotland Samuel Chapman, son, 9, scholar, Lancashire, Liverpool Hugh Chapman, son, 8, scholar, Scotland Ann Chapman, daughter, 6, scholar, Lancashire, Liverpool Mary Chapman, daughter, 4, scholar, Scotland Maria Kerley, servant, unmarried, 30, general servant, Paddington, Middx Mrs Chapman was born MacLean. The photograph looks to have been taken around this time. I checked 10 years later, and Ann was there aged 16, so I wonder why she missed out on being photographed with her siblings? Links to the eBay item (I have no connection with the seller, except that I emailed her to ask the names of the children, which she'd not posted in the item description, though she said she had them!): http://cgi.ebay*com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120044883761&sspagename=ADME:L:RTQ:US:1 or http://tinyurl*com/ygylyo Cheers, Peter. |

I suspect there aren't any descendants of these children. In 1901, Hugh has two children, Dorothy E G, aged 3, and Alastair, aged 2. His wife is Marianne E, aged 45, so I'd suppose there were older children, but I can't find them in 1891, nor can I find a marriage at freeBMD. No one at GR has Alastair listed. Someone does have a Dorothy E A born in London at the right time, and I've left her a message just in case. In 1891, Samuel H, Anne and Mary H are all living with their mother Rose, now 76. They are 39, 36 and 34, and all unmarried. I can find Samuel and Mary, still single, in a Kensington boarding house in 1901. So I suppose hope now rests on Rose. Can anyone find her after 1861? |
