Hi! I've just found this national archives web-site which has lots of really useful resources. I've downloaded my great-great grandfather's naval service record which is really interesting & there are loads more documents I'm tempted by, but as far as I can see it costs £3.50 for every single document you download. Does anyone who's familiar with this web-site know whether there's any cheaper way of purchasing a number of downloads or am I doomed to spending all my hard-earned cash obtaining them individually? |

Its the Official site for the records at Kew. It would cost you more if you had to travel there & then copy the records which are 50p per sheet. So you have a bargain cos its instant. I,ve got Army records too over the site which cost minimum £10 BUT it would have cost me £15.50 had i travelled to Kew with my family history Soc. I Think its great that some records are available online |

I suppose when you put it that way it's not bad, but what with ancestry subscription & sending off for umpteen certificates from the GRO this isn't exactly a cheap hobby, is it? |

Scotland's People also looks expensive on the face of it. BUT there's a free index of deposited wills etc. from about 1500 to 1901. They cost £5 to download, but there's swings and roundabouts. One was only 2 pages but it gave me several names. Another is 37 pages - I haven't tackled that one yet. And there are some English wills on there as well. Not very many but someone could be lucky. J |

The only advise I can give is Never Ever Ever add it all up...Im sure I could have got myself a small house with what it's cost me over the years |
